date: 3/10/2002 |
|
Chronic allergic rhinitis is a risk factor for chronic otitis media (glue ear).

Biology of the mite |
date: 12/8/2001 |
|
Fossil studies show that mites have been on earth for over 400 million years. The house dust mite evolved from around 23 million years ago to live as a scavenger in environments such as birds nests. Some modern homes have provided the perfect environment for domestic mites to thrive. Understanding the mite will help to reverse this phenomenon.

Unborn children at risk? |
date: 11/30/2001 |
|
Elements from the droppings of the house dust mite
have been found in the fluid surrounding unborn children.
Is this the primary cause of asthma/rhinitis?

Cross-Reactivity - a problem in allergy |
date: 2/15/2001 |
|
It has been known for some time that allergens of the house dust mite (European and American) cross-react with allergens of storage mites. Cross reactivity occurs as the mites share some of the same enzymes that cause allergic reaction.

Why is the House Dust Mite a major cause of allergy |
date: 10/15/2000 |
|
The HDM grazes on fungi and rotting skin scales and their digestive system may create up to 20 dung-pellets a day. The droppings are wrapped in a special film and contain undigested scraps of food which are broken down by powerful enzymes to provide nourishment for the mite later. These enzymes are the cause of allergic disease in vulnerable people.
